The Chores Program
Current charter school funding is not designed to implement residential education programs. Boarding
schools have a 24-hr a day need for structured activities and supervision This differentiates it from the 6-hr a day
programs typically found at charter schools. In response to this we have created the Chores Program. Every student
commits to (never more than) one-and-a-half hours of school maintenance and/or operational work each day. Chores include
tasks such as laundry, food preparation, agriculture, maintenance, tutoring, etc. Additionally, a large amout
of the campus acreage will be planted with fruits and vegetables for the schools use. All students must participate and
each will be required to do each of the jobs an equal number of times. Faculty and staff will regularly engage
in these tasks as well. The Chores program gives children the benefit of regular responsibilities and valuable
job skills. Consequently, this also allows the school to reduce the maintenance and support personel
we need to hire.
Every day someone has to:
- Milk the cows
- Gather the eggs
- Feed and water crops
- Prepare meals
- Clean stables and recreation areas
- Maintain the Library
- Etc.
