S.O.S. Rangers
The Rangers are an elite corps of students comprised of the most responsible, dedicated
and emotionally mature students in the 8th grade and above. These staff and faculty appointed student-supervisors combine
elements of the "prefect" of British boarding schools as well as elements of the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.
Rangers are the front-line enforcers of the Code of Student Conduct and the Rules of Behavior. They make up the
backbone of the Associated Student Congress. Rangers monitor and record incidences of school rule violation, vote in Lodge
and Ranger Council elections, provide role-models for younger children, foster a friendly competition between the Dorm Clusters,
and conduct nightly lights-out head counts.
The Rules of Behavior for the Sequoia Odyssey School are enforced with a point system. Positive behaviors, such as momets
of moral clarity, empathy, loyalty, self-control, etc. are awarded with house points. Rule violations result in loss
of points. Each individual member of a house contributes to his/her house's point total. Each year a trophy, as
well as house-wide rewards and privileges, are awarded to all members of the house with the highest house point
                  total.
Each year, one male and one female 7th grader from each boarding house are selected as Jr. Rangers and given the opportunity
to serve an additional year as Rangers. The Jr. Ranger’s twin missions are to learn the day-to-day function of House
and Ranger councils and to represent the interests of all the younger children in council meetings. Jr. Rangers do not function
as enforcers of rules and conduct.
Elections for available Ranger positions are held annually at the end of the spring term. Faculty and staff nominate
and vote on the positions of Ranger Guides for each boarding house. In addition, eight more students are nominated
and voted on from each of the four boarding houses.
